On the 29th of October, 2004, a group of people from a wide range of
backgrounds and countries, met in the city of Trinidad, Bolivia, and
agreed to form a non-governmental organisation with the name
‘Fundación Totaí’. FT was founded to provide free or affordable services
in the areas of health, sport, education and community aid as a
proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The following month, FT
acquired a plot of land in a deprived area of Trinidad for the construction
of a health centre and by the end of that same year, FT was granted
charitable status by the Government of Beni State.
Within a year, a range of cooperation agreements had been signed by FT
with local and International bodies to provide a variety of services, including
what would prove to be a key agreement, signed in May 2005 with CBM, to
design and establish a Programme for the Prevention of Hearing
Impairment in the Beni state. A bilingual Pre-Kinder Education class started
in March, launching FT's education activities. Meanwhile, a choza (hut) was
constructed on the site of FT's future headquarters to be used as an initial
outreach health post for activities in the local community. From 5th
December 2005, FT dentist Miguel-Ángel Aráuz and his wife Rut kindly lent
the use of their home as a base for FT's activities. FT’s sport ministry was
by now well underway, with a football school in place since 2004,
supplemented in 2006 by a new basketball school, with training sessions for
both taking place on weekday afternoons in the community.
By 2007, work had been completed on the first phase of FT's headquarters and
'Casa Margaret' was officially opened on the 23rd of April, allowing FT to
expand its range of activities. A future goal was the construction of operating
theatres for Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) surgical cases. In the meantime, on 24th
October 2007, FT's surgical staff commenced Microsurgery of the Middle Ear
using facilities belonging to a local Charity (Caritas) and also, from 29th
October, at the regional military hospital. Arts & Crafts classes, both at FT and in
the local school for the deaf IDEPPSO-Beni, added to Education’s growing brief.
Health Education became an increasing focus as by now regular courses
were being taught by FT staff, using FT’s WHO-approved translation of the
same body's manuals on Primary Ear & Hearing Care (Basic, Intermediate
and Advanced levels).
In April of 2008, FT launched its thrice-weekly classes on-site for deprived
children either living in the local community or those who live in Trinidad’s
penitentiaries with their imprisoned parents. Later that year, Religious
Education classes were taken by FT staff in local schools. In April 2009,
FT embarked upon an ambitious, nine-month project across the Beni region
in which the prevalence of hearing impairment and ear disorders was
assessed using WHO guidelines and protocol. The findings of this study are to
be published in due course.
In the city of Cochabamba, from 13th to 16th April 2010, FT organised and
presided over the first national workshop on Primary Ear & Hearing Care, using
its translated WHO materials. 2010 also saw the completion of operating
theatres on FT’s own premises, with ENT surgery commencing at the base
hospital on 22nd April. On 8th November, the development of FT’s headquarters
took another major step towards completion with the opening of an in-patients
admissions ward with 14 beds.
