Whether sitting in the stands or taking part on
the field of play, sporting pursuits provide a
welcome distraction from the harsh realities of
life in South America's poorest country.
Trinidad is no exception to this rule. Naturally,
football reigns supreme as the number one
sport, with a thriving local league and the
town's pitches teeming with activity at the
weekends. But other sports have their
followings, not least basketball, popular
among teenagers. And in the average
Trinidad neighbourhood, a
basketball/mini-football court is never more
than a stone's throw away.
Sport, then, provides an ideal vehicle for
getting alongside young people in the
community, training them in sound sporting
principles and sharing the good news of
Jesus Christ.
